CULTURE NEWS

  • Tomatomania! returns in March with tomato classes and displays of heirloom and hybrid varieties. It kicks off at Otto & Sons Nursery in Fillmore from March 12 to 14 and moves to Moorpark, Somis, Ojai, and Ventura Botanical Gardens by April 19.  Moorpark Acorn
  • Conejo Players Theatre presents the musical comedy 'Lend Me a Tenor', a fast-paced show with mistaken identities and operatic arias. The production runs through Feb. 7 with shows at 8:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and a matinee on Sat, Jan. 31 (2:00 p.m.).  Moorpark Acorn

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Grocery prices in Ventura keep rising with lamb now at $50 per pound and prime beef at $70 — local families are relying on coupons and food banks to stretch their budgets.  Moorpark Acorn

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At California Lutheran University, President John Nunes gave a Jan. 22 address that launched the 'Where Dreams Take Flight' fundraising campaign, which aims to raise $25 million for scholarships, renovating Samuelson Chapel, and building a track facility for potential Olympic training.  Ventura County Star
  • Local leaders have announced that Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library will launch in Ventura County once $200,000 is raised from community donations with matching funds from the state. The program will offer children from birth to age five monthly *bilingual* and English-only books.  Moorpark Acorn

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ventura and Santa Barbara County officials have advanced a pilot commuter rail proposal that could offer weekday Amtrak rush-hour service beginning in April. The plan, approved by the Santa Barbara County board in January and pending final approvals, would serve stops from Oxnard to San Luis Obispo, and fares start at $17 (10 rides for $50).  Moorpark Acorn

  • Grace’s Donovan Merrill and Nathan Pang helped secure a 57-53 win over Santa Clara at Grace Church in Simi Valley on Jan. 14—while Oak Park girls won 76-18 against Camarillo in a Coastal Canyon League game on Jan. 16.  Moorpark Acorn
