COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Firefighters from the Ventura County Fire Department helped deliver a baby on Highway 23 near the Olsen Road offramp just before 10:00 a.m. Thursday and transported the mother + baby Andres to the hospital safely.  KEYT
  • SpaceX will launch a Falcon 9 rocket carrying 25 Starlink satellites on Monday, Feb. 2 at 7:17 a.m. from Vandenberg Space Force Base. Ventura viewers can watch from Ventura Pier or Emma Wood State Beach and may hear brief sonic booms during liftoff.  Ventura County Star
  • On Jan. 21, a Stop Human Trafficking Awareness panel at Simi Valley United Methodist Church featured keynote speaker Rebecca Bender who shared her survivor story and urged community members to notice warning signs.   • Moorpark Adult School’s Business of Culinary Arts course named two new bilingual instructors — Karina Pineda and Isabella Cisneros — to lead Monday and Wednesday evening classes for Ventura County residents seeking practical training in cooking and food industry business skills.  Moorpark Acorn
  • Oak Park resident Ophra Ashur launched her self-published book Sailing the ABCs, which uses Acorn newspaper articles to guide young readers in recognizing letters—featuring step-by-step instructions to fold an origami sailboat and vibrant illustrations to bring the alphabet to life.  Moorpark Acorn

HEALTH NEWS

  • Andrew Weymer was elected chief of medical staff at Dignity Health St. John's hospitals, with his two-year term having begun Jan. 1. The board-certified pulmonologist has over 30 years of experience and will work with hospital leadership & physicians to uphold patient care standards.  Moorpark Acorn

SPORTS NEWS

  • Oaks Christian School announced a major overhaul of its football program with Rudy Carlton named varsity head coach and Ron Pitts appointed as general manager (head of football operations) effective Feb. 2. The changes will strengthen ties between middle and high school teams and offer NFL mentoring for student-athletes.  Moorpark Acorn
  • The Dons clinched a Channel League title share as they beat Ventura 84-57 today with Levi Oakes scoring 18 points. They will try to win outright against Rio Mesa on Monday while the Cardinals completed an 8-0 Tri-Valley League season with a win over Foothill Tech.  KEYT
  • Powerhouse San Marcos is the fifth seed in Division I of the CIF-SS girls water polo playoffs, with games beginning Wednesday, Feb. 4 at Orange Lutheran and continuing through Feb. 21 at Mt. San Antonio College; Division II teams include Ventura, which will compete at Westridge.  KEYT
