CULTURE NEWS

  • High Street Arts Center is running the musical Annie (an uplifting retelling that opened Jan. 30) at Moorpark and will continue through March 1; the show features 12-year-old Ruby Jimenez as understudy and updated staging that honors the classic's spirit.  Moorpark Acorn
  • Local students from Westlake, Moorpark, Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley showcased their creativity at the PTA Arts Reflections Awards on Jan. 13 at the Ventura County Office of Education in Camarillo (theme: I Belong), and 27 finalists will represent the county at the state contest in May.  Moorpark Acorn
  • Underwood Family Farms in Moorpark hosts a Tulip Garden Experience with thousands of blooming tulips available to the public through March. The event features visitors, including a 3-year-old picking a flower, enjoying the vibrant display.  Moorpark Acorn

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Conejo Unified may lay off 15 mental health workers after June if alternate funding fails to cover a $5 million shortfall from a canceled federal grant; the board will vote on the change at a Feb. 18 meeting while current services stay funded.  Ventura County Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Storms will douse Ventura County starting tomorrow, with coastal and valley areas set to get 1.5 to 3 inches and foothill and mountain spots up to 6 inches of rain through Tuesday, a local meteorologist said. Snow in mountain regions and high surf with rip currents are expected Thursday.  Ventura County Star

  • Ventura County Animal Services features Riley, a sensitive senior pet with impaired vision who moves slowly and relies on verbal cues to navigate; the shelter hopes he finds a calm, patient home soon.  Moorpark Acorn

  • Field hockey player Ethan Reynolds, 17, missed bronze at last year's Pan American Games in Asunción, Paraguay + now aims for a spot on the U.S. Men's National Team for the 2028 Olympics. Raised with a strong hockey legacy at Moorpark, he has played internationally since his early days.  Moorpark Acorn
  • In CIF-SS second round boys basketball playoffs, Rancho Verde won 84 to 69 over San Marcos while Canyon edged Oxnard 70 to 67 in overtime; Mater Dei, North Vista, Verbum Dei, St. Bonaventure, Dunn, VCA Santa Maria and Providence/SB also won close games as teams advanced for the next round.  KEYT
