COMMUNITY NEWS

  • SpaceX will launch its Falcon 9 carrying 25 Starlink satellites at midnight PT on Sunday, March 1 from Vandenberg Space Force Base; Ventura residents can watch from local spots (Ventura Pier, Emma Wood State Beach) and may hear brief sonic booms during the lift-off.  Ventura County Star
  • Camarillo volunteer Janet Baker recalled trading themed pins and guiding foreign visitors during the 1984 Olympics and has signed up to volunteer for LA28 if a local opening arises in Ventura (she hopes to bring her longtime spirit to upcoming events).  Moorpark Acorn

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Moorpark College got state approval for its new online bachelor’s degree in cyber defense and network operations — applications will open later this year. The program includes hands-on labs and industry-aligned classes to meet local demand for cybersecurity professionals.  Moorpark Acorn
  • The California Student Aid Commission says Ventura students must complete either FAFSA or CADAA online by Monday, March 2 to qualify for state aid — community college deadlines vary, so check each school’s requirements and email confirmations.  Ventura County Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Monmouth Way, closed nearly 18 months after a gasoline leak in 2024, will reopen next week with lanes open in both directions. City crews are replacing the damaged sewer line while the gas station owner continues testing and cleanup efforts.  Ventura County Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The California Fish and Game Commission listed mountain lions as threatened and placed a petition to tighten urban coyote rules on its rulemaking calendar. Public testimony on the new coyote regulations is scheduled for April 15 to 16 in Sacramento, which will help shape non-lethal removal guidelines for suburban Ventura.  Moorpark Acorn
  • Judge Donna Geck upheld an injunction on Friday stopping Sable Offshore from restarting onshore oil pipelines along the Gaviota Coast near Ventura. Sable Offshore (the Houston-based firm) must notify the court (at least ten court days before operations resume) to follow safety measures established after the 2015 Refugio spill.  KEYT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Following a Feb. 9 state alert that confirmed 17 measles cases, Ventura County Public Health urges residents to check immunization records and get their MMR vaccine to stay protected as commuters+travelers face potential exposure from neighboring counties+local hotspots.  Thousand Oaks Acorn
