Good morning, Ventura. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 1st of May.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • An EdSource investigation found that many California school boards are letting cities and counties charge millions for police officers at schools by bundling police services with other school spending without public review. In Ventura County, Oxnard Union High School District pays a contract that covers officers already funded by local government + boards get little annual oversight on spending.  Ventura County Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A California bill to protect kids from harmful anti-aging skincare products passed a key policy committee, with Assembly Member Alex Lee warning that chemicals like Retinol can cause irritation and severe skin issues. Dermatologists and parents say attractive packaging and social media marketing make these products appealing to children, and the bill may be signed into law by year’s end — lawmakers expect strong pushback from the beauty industry.  KEYT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ventura County health officials said no measles cases have been reported since 2017, yet they receive about three calls a week from providers concerned about potential cases — the county’s vaccination rate for incoming kindergartners is slightly below herd immunity. Labs are ready to test and contact tracing will begin immediately if an outbreak emerges, though planned federal budget cuts and hospital changes may challenge their response.  Ventura County Star
