- ➤ On May 1, about 50 volunteers built furniture such as desks and a coat hanger tree from donated Ikea items to finish the nearly complete Thrive Grove Navigation Center in Thousand Oaks, a $9.5 million temporary homeless shelter with meals, medical care and a dog park. Officials plan a ribbon cutting on May 7 and may add new modular units for 20 more people—efforts that aim to provide immediate support for those in need. Ventura County Star
- ➤ At the Thrive Grove Navigation Center in Thousand Oaks, furniture from Ikea was donated and assembled on May 1 to ready a tiny home shelter that will house up to 50 people. - ➤ After a multiyear drug death investigation, Ventura County Fentanyl and Overdose Crimes Units arrested and federally indicted 43-year-old Michael McDevitt from Simi Valley for supplying fentanyl that led to the death of a 32-year-old Thousand Oaks woman brought to a fire station in September 2021—he now faces a minimum of 20 years in prison. - ➤ Cal State Channel Islands held its first Datathon on April 26th for high school and community college students in Ventura County to learn data analysis without needing prior skills. Students learned basic programming and data filtering while working on projects like evaluating cosmetics ads on Facebook—an effort that also provided details about the new Bachelor of Science in Data Science degree.
