  • The La Conchita Yard Sale took place over the first weekend in May and featured surfboards, boogie boards, plants, art, clothing, and jewelry while one neighbor set out a door for free. Neighbors donated funds to the event—money that in the past helped pay for speed bumps not covered by government agencies.  KEYT

CRIME NEWS

  • Matthew Rey Scott was sentenced to 19 years and eight months after his March conviction for first-degree burglary and delaying a peace officer—he broke into two Simi Valley homes where residents saw him enter—and he was caught while on parole, with officials saying the sentence will deter future crimes.  KEYT
  • Chantelle Lavergne Woods pleaded guilty to misusing medical professionals’ identities to create fraudulent immigration documents and to using a deceased doctor’s credentials to order controlled substances—her sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 31.  KEYT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cachuma Lake is busy as visitors camp, fish, boat & check the water level while the reservoir stands at 744.62 feet and 87% capacity with 167,985 acre-feet. The county spent millions on improvements and will soon open an updated RV park when PG&E restores power while a committee reviews swimming options and fire officials remind property owners to maintain clearances by June 1.  KEYT

  • Island Packers in Ventura has seen whale sightings this spring, extending the season past its usual mid-April end, and the crew posts daily updates on Instagram plus visitors can book half- or full-day trips to see them.  KEYT

  • The West Coast Outdoors & Sportfishing Expo is held at the Ventura County Fairgrounds where families can learn to cast flies—and see an osprey grab a rainbow trout from the children’s pool, while a bear mascot from Ventura Auto Center sparks a name contest. The expo runs on Sunday from 10:30 a.m.—6 p.m.  KEYT
  • Kentucky Derby fans filled The Derby Room at the Derby Club at the Ventura County Fairgrounds to place bets and watch Sovereignty win on a muddy track with Journalism close behind. Many plan to return for the Preakness on May 17 and the Belmont Stakes on June 7 as the club marks its 30th anniversary — manager Eva Mora noted this is her 28th Kentucky Derby event.  KEYT
