- ➤ Jewel Pedi, who co-founded Food Share by feeding neighbors from her two-car garage, died at 98 on May 9 in Bullhead City. A funeral service is scheduled for May 29 at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park (donations can be made to Food Share to honor her legacy). Ventura County Star

- ➤ SpaceX is launching its Falcon 9 carrying 24 Starlink satellites today from Space Launch Complex 4-East at Vandenberg Space Force Base, with a four-hour window starting at 7 a.m.—Ventura residents can watch the liftoff from Ventura Pier or Emma Wood State Beach. Ventura County Star
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Researchers from Cal Poly and Scripps developed a method that uses plankton community data to predict baleen whale density along local coastal waters (published May 6 in PLOS One). The approach improves accuracy by 53 percent and may guide measures to protect migrating whales. KEYT

- ➤ Ventura County officials & community leaders broke ground on a state-funded Homekey housing project for the homeless near Camarillo on May 13. The model unit is an example of efforts to create transitional housing for those in need. Ventura County Star

- ➤ Ventura County officials held a groundbreaking ceremony on May 13 at 1732 Lewis Road (near Camarillo) to start the state-funded Homekey housing project. The 88-unit project (part of a larger wellness campus) is expected to complete in fall 2027. Ventura County Star
