EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Moorpark College’s Griffin Stadium on May 20, about 600 graduates earned their degrees, including 12-year-old Dev Saravanan (with 12 degrees earned since age 7) in a ceremony that also celebrated the college’s first bachelor’s degree class. This event marked a milestone for the school.  Ventura County Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Coast Guard investigators are looking into whether an emergency flare fired from a stranded sailboat near Santa Rosa Island on May 15 ignited dry brush, triggering a potential wildfire at Channel Islands National Park (rescue operations were completed with no injuries).  Ventura County Star
  • Wildfire smoke spread across Southern California and prompted an air quality alert that lasted until 10 p.m. Thursday. In Ventura, the Sandy Fire reportedly began when a tractor struck a rock in dry vegetation and is under investigation.  Ventura County Star
