  • Local nonprofit Friends of Fieldworkers will host its third annual Harvesting Hope Fundraiser on May 31 at Studio Channel Islands in Camarillo to honor local farmworkers and their families. The event will feature a social hour with complimentary drinks and hors d'oeuvres, a silent auction, awards, and scholarships—along with a tribute to Oxnard fieldworker Oscar Pimentel, who died during last year's heatwave.  Moorpark Acorn
  • Ventura County Family Justice Center Foundation will host the Voice of Hope Gala on May 29 at 5 p.m. at Tierra Rejada Farms’ Walnut Grove to raise funds for Camp HOPE, which has helped over 300 children recover from domestic violence since 2015—activities include live music, an auction, and awards recognizing local advocates.  Moorpark Acorn

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Ventura County officials are warning beachgoers not to have contact with the water at Hobie Beach in Channel Islands Harbor this Memorial Day weekend because bacteria levels exceed state standards (updated May 23). Similar warnings have been issued in Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties, while beaches in Santa Barbara and Long Beach meet state health guidelines.  Ventura County Star

  • Doctors at Dignity Health (in Ventura) and Sutter Health in Santa Barbara report that Biden’s metastatic prostate cancer diagnosis has led more local men to schedule screenings. Guidelines advise men form a personal screening plan with their doctor since the process is complex.  KEYT

  • On May 15, Oaks Christian beat Camarillo 11-1 in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs at Oaks Christian School. Camarillo finished the season 20-5 overall and 5-2 in league—records that mark their season performance.  Moorpark Acorn
