COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local law enforcement and community teams will run in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics of Southern California on June 4 at 2 p.m.—starting and ending at Finney’s Crafthouse, 580 Ventura Blvd. in Camarillo, with the route passing through Old Town and possible street closures. Funds raised will help give athletes with intellectual disabilities the equipment, training and support they need to succeed—Ventura PD led Region 1 by raising $8,975 as of May 28.  Moorpark Acorn

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lanny Kaufer, who volunteered for the SCOPE Project in 1965, will present a multimedia voting rights history lesson at Cal State Channel Islands’ Osher Lifelong Learning Institute on June 26 — the course is part of summer classes running from June 9 to July 17 and is open to adults of all ages.  Moorpark Acorn
  • Ventura County Farm to School brought agriculture into classrooms at Ocean View Junior High in Oxnard with 58 gardens across 11 districts and 45,000 students learning to grow their own food. Assembly Bill 675 passed unanimously and will boost local food in school meals while expanding hands-on garden programs—efforts that will help more students connect with agriculture—across the state.  KEYT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office has sent an alert warning that many off-road electric bikes (e-bikes) and motorized scooters are not allowed on public roads due to safety issues. In partnership with cities including Camarillo, Moorpark, and Ojai, school resource deputies and traffic officers will educate riders and enforce the law to reduce collisions and injuries.  Moorpark Acorn

HEALTH NEWS

  • Valley fever cases in Ventura County surged to 172 through April, more than doubling last year's count, and local health officials link the rise to weather changes and soil disruption from wildfires. Local surfer and mom Tammy Takara was diagnosed in February and now takes antifungal medication as doctors warn that high-risk groups may face severe complications.  Ventura County Star
  • Healthcare workers at six Planned Parenthood clinics in Thousand Oaks, Ventura, Oxnard, Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, and San Luis Obispo will strike on June 10 and 11 to protest alleged unfair labor practices and a staffing crisis — proposals to improve staffing were rejected after nine months of bargaining.  KEYT
