Good morning, Ventura.
🚨 Crime
The California DMV warned Ventura locals that scam texts claim unpaid tickets, threaten suspension of vehicle registration and revocation of driving privileges, and offer discounted fees to lure victims (the agency said no official business is ever conducted by text) so residents should avoid clicking any links and contact the DMV directly if in doubt.
🎓 Education
CSU Channel Islands officials learned in May that the NSF cancelled two grants meant to fund research programs for underrepresented students in STEM, ending about $3 million in support and eliminating funding for 50 summer research scholarships as well as benefits for 324 undergraduates — the university plans to challenge the decision. The loss may reduce opportunities for students to gain valuable research experience before advancing their studies.
🏛️ Government
The Ventura Police Department debuted its new Mounted Patrol Unit—featuring four horses and riders—on June 3 in Ventura.
