EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ CSU Channel Islands laid off 13 employees last week amid declining enrollment and potential state funding cuts (the move is expected to save about $10.4 million this year). The university said it may cut four more management roles by the end of July as it works to reduce a projected $14 million deficit. Ventura County Star
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ High fire season is underway as La Niña brings drier, warmer weather to the central coast and more than 57,000 acres have burned from San Diego to Ventura County so far—small fires have started and county officials warn that Santa Ana and sundowner winds may worsen conditions. - ➤ CSU Channel Islands faculty and students returned 700 tidewater gobis to Topanga Lagoon today after caring for them in aquariums for five months so the lagoon could recover from the Palisades Fire in Pacific Palisades and Malibu — the team will continue to monitor the fish as they resume their role in the food chain.
