- ➤ On June 30, Ventura police investigated a stabbing of a homeless woman near the Santa Clara River bottom at about 10:20 a.m.—Simi police later ruled a call for shots fired on Cheam Avenue as swatting, while firefighters controlled a garage fire in Moorpark and officials probed a suspicious house fire in Santa Paula on June 29 that forced one resident to leave. - ➤ Authorities are investigating the shooting of a 23-year-old man by a deputy on July 1 in Thousand Oaks after a report of an armed person with a mental health issue who fired a round; the deputy, who has served for nine years, is on administrative leave pending review & the district attorney’s office will conduct an independent inquiry with no other injuries reported. - ➤ Neil Liam Reb of Oak Park was charged with two counts of felony gross vehicular manslaughter after a May 6 crash on Via Las Brisas—he drove his 2024 Jeep Wrangler at nearly twice the 45 mph limit when he struck a Volkswagen Tiguan turning south, killing 77-year-old Alejandro and 73-year-old Maria Ramirez—and he posted bail of $50,000 ahead of his arraignment set for July 14 in Superior Court. - ➤ On Tuesday, President Richard Yao of CSU Channel Islands announced he will step down effective August 1 to lead DataPhilanthropy (the giving arm of the Jeff T. Green Foundation). The university will share transition details in the coming weeks (including successor plans). KEYT

- ➤ Ventura County Animal Services is offering free dog adoptions at its two shelters until July 13 to ease overcrowding as more than 200 animals have been housed following a surge from Fourth of July fireworks.
