COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ A local summer camp is teaching kids to scuba dive and earn PADI certification at the Ventura Dive & Sport pool near the Harbor while campers made open water dives off the back of Anacapa Island (two days in a row). Owner Zach Cantrell said the camp (PADI certification is for life) will add another session this summer if enough kids sign up. KEYT
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Michael Bresnak, serving 15 years to life for the 2011 murder of Jeffrey Korber whose body was hidden in a freezer, withdrew his parole request on July 11—after admitting he had avoided paying court-ordered restitution to the victim’s family, officials said. Ventura County Star
- ➤ A Simi Valley resident was stabbed to death on the 2900 block of Crescent Way in Thousand Oaks after Ventura County Sheriff's Office officers arrived at 8:23 p.m.—authorities say a 41-year-old suspect, Miguel Angel Reyes Cano, fled in a blue 2002 Dodge truck with plate 7K43579. KEYT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Ventura’s Main Street Moves, a downtown street closure begun during COVID, will reopen in November after property owners voted down the Pedestrian Mall Act on July 8—blaming financial losses. Mayor Pro Tem Doug Halter said a proclamation will be considered on September 16 to reopen Main Street on November 2—he noted the closure cannot be reconsidered for a year. KEYT
