CRIME NEWS

  • A Cal State Channel Islands professor was charged with assaulting a federal officer after he allegedly threw a tear gas canister at agents during an immigration raid near a cannabis farm in Camarillo on July 10 — his bond was set at $15,000 and he is scheduled to return to court next month.  Thousand Oaks Acorn
  • Christopher Hurtado of Santa Paula was sentenced to three years in prison after he admitted kicking and striking a sick and pregnant sea lion near the Ventura Pier in March—officers detained him after he fled and found methamphetamine in his pocket.  KEYT
  • Ventura Councilman Jim Duran settled a lawsuit in June that accused him of knowing about sexual abuse by his son of a 14-year-old church youth group member seven years ago—terms remain undisclosed.  Ventura County Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Port Hueneme unveiled its second STAX Engineering emissions control barge this week to capture pollutants from ships, which removes 99% of particulate matter + 95% of nitrogen oxides that harm nearby neighborhoods. The move supports the port’s Zero Emissions by 2030 plan, with the mayor noting that reduced emissions will benefit public health+ and the local environment.  KEYT

  • Masked federal agents have conducted immigration raids across Southern California this summer—one raid occurred at a Ventura County farm—prompting lawmakers to propose rules requiring agents to show their names.
