COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ventura County Community Foundation started the Neighbors Support Fund to help low-income families, immigrants and local businesses hurt by ICE raids, budget cuts and cuts to food, rental and health aid. Local nonprofits will get grants and donations have already hit over $105,000 while Thousand Oaks may add public funds soon—every dollar spent will be tracked for community benefit.  Thousand Oaks Acorn

CRIME NEWS

  • The bodies of a 49-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man from Thousand Oaks were found Wednesday evening in a vehicle on the Pacific Coast Highway near the Mugu Canyon Rest Area, and investigators noted both had gunshot wounds—evidence shows this isolated homicide is under investigation.  KEYT
  • Oxnard police are searching for Antonio Ramirez, 44, who went missing around noon on August 6 at the 5400 block of Henry Place+ he is 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighs about 240 pounds, and police ask anyone with information to contact them immediately.  KEYT

CULTURE NEWS

  • At the Ventura County Fair, the Surf Rodeo family opened a speakeasy for the over-21 crowd after the surf rodeo was canceled because of beach construction—J.D. Drury said it took seven weeks to set up and people enter through a sparkling horseshoe into the Stargirl Lounge and Golden Pony Bar—where local bands like Saturn, Raging Arb, the Redheads and Skadaddyz perform and the event runs through Sunday.  KEYT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fire crews are tackling a 600-acre fire called the Canyon Fire south of Lake Piru; the blaze broke out just after 1:30 p.m. on August 7 and has led to evacuation orders and warnings for parts of Ventura and Los Angeles counties—affecting zones such as PIRU-14, PIRU-01, PIRU-05, LAKP-06, and LAKP-04—as officials monitor the situation.  KEYT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local lawmakers and city officials have raised concerns about AB 470 because it would let phone companies stop keeping copper landlines that many residents need for emergencies. City leaders warn the bill risks leaving people without reliable service during disasters—especially in high-fire-risk areas—while AT&T says the change will modernize communication.  Thousand Oaks Acorn
  • Ventura County Fire Station 34 in Thousand Oaks opened on March 15 on Mountclef Boulevard and now serves the north side of Thousand Oaks and the east end of Santa Rosa Valley—replacing the 60-year-old station that faced traffic issues on Avenida de los Arboles and Moorpark Road. The modern 13,300-square-foot facility cost about $9.7 million and features pull-through engine bays, extensive living quarters and a decontamination area—improving firefighter safety and efficiency.  Thousand Oaks Acorn
