ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 53-year-old Santa Paula resident lost her right arm after a palm tree fell on her at Golf N' Stuff in Ventura on Aug. 6—doctors amputated her arm after severe damage—and she is now recovering at Ventura County Medical Center.  Ventura County Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ventura College, Oxnard College and Moorpark College welcomed students back on Aug. 11 for the Fall semester as part of the Ventura County Community College District, which now offers bachelor's degrees in select majors. Ventura College marked its 100th anniversary and Oxnard College celebrated its 50th while students bought books and checked financial aid—campus signs also assured students that 'everyone is welcome here except ICE.'  KEYT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A local homeowner cleared four messy raised garden beds that had turned into a wild jungle before hosting a meeting with the Ventura Land Trust—he used a 50–50 mix of local compost and garden soil with help from a friend’s pickup truck—so the beds can once again grow vegetables like lettuce, carrots and herbs.  Ventura County Star

  • Grace Nackers, a 15-year-old daughter of a Ventura Fire Captain, swam from Anacapa Island to Silver Strand on August 8, taking 7 hours and 24 minutes while strong currents challenged her—her father, family and an observer on the boat Faith watched closely. Her effort raised funds for first responders, veterans and Gold Star families—money that will support the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb on September 7 at Crown Plaza.  KEYT
