Good morning, Ventura. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 15th of August.
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Ventura police reported that an 82-year-old man turning left was struck in a collision by a northbound vehicle driven by a 60-year-old on Aug. 14—leaving one man in critical condition and another with moderate injuries—and that northbound Wells Road was closed while police continued their investigation. - ➤ A brush fire called the King Fire burned along Interstate 5 near Smokey Bear Road between Gorman and Pyramid Lake early Thursday, prompting a temporary closure of two northbound lanes and evacuation warnings for nearby RV parks—firefighters from Angeles National Forest and Los Angeles County Fire Department are battling the blaze that has grown to 490 acres and is 5% contained. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A UCLA study found that fire season now starts 10 weeks earlier than in the 1990s because warmer weather and drier vegetation make lands more prone to burning—pushing Ventura's Ready, Set, Go! program and local fire agencies to urge residents to clear brush and prepare faster. Officials warn that if the warming trend continues, wildfires will likely start even earlier, leaving communities with less time to act. Thousand Oaks Acorn
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The family of Jaime Alanis Garcia filed a $47 million federal tort claim against ICE—saying agents used too much force during a raid at Glass House Farms near Camarillo that led him to fall from a greenhouse roof on July 10. The claim states that ICE agents in unmarked vehicles used rubber bullets, tasers and tear gas, and he died two days later from his injuries. Thousand Oaks Acorn

Ranch project at 325 Hampshire Road will begin as early as next month—transforming the former Kmart site into 420 homes and 15,000 square feet of commercial space.
