On Aug. 17, firefighters battled a brush fire near Yerba Buena Road by Circle X Ranch and halted its progress, lifting the evacuation warning along Deer Creek Road by 11:20 p.m.

Channel Islands National Park will open a new campground with six sites on Aug.
27 near the Prisoners Harbor pier on Santa Cruz Island, offering a backpacking link between Scorpion Anchorage and remote backcountry sites. Volunteers built the site and reservations open today at $15 per site per night.
