CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Jesse Andrew Mendoza, a 20-year-old from Santa Barbara, was convicted for assaulting a CHP officer during a DUI arrest on Oct. 5, 2024 — he will face up to 15 years in prison when he is sentenced on Sept. 16. KEYT
- ➤ A 33-year-old man was arrested early Monday for allegedly carjacking a Carl's Jr. employee leaving work Sunday evening and assaulting him - police said he was booked on charges of carjacking, resisting arrest and being under the influence while the victim's black Honda Civic remains missing. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ California Lutheran University opened Student Central at its Thousand Oaks campus on Aug.6 to combine academic services — financial aid and student accounts — and get ready for the school year that begins Aug.25. Ventura County Star
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Firefighting crews near Santa Margarita are winding down operations on the Gifford Fire as they reach 91% containment. Crews are now cleaning up damage and demobilizing about 800 people a day — work that will continue until the fire is fully contained. KEYT
- ➤ The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for Ventura County’s valley and mountain areas, where dry air, breezy winds and extreme heat will create dangerous fire conditions from 9 a.m. Aug. 20 to 9 p.m. Aug. 23—fire agencies and the local power utility will boost staffing and monitor circuits to help prevent sparks.
