COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Ventura officials held a grand opening for the expanded Westpark Skatepark on August 28. Local skateboarders including a 25-year-old from Simi Valley and a 13-year-old from Ventura enjoyed the new facility. Ventura County Star
- ➤ On August 18, the Conejo Recreation and Park District was awarded a $2M grant from the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy to help purchase its headquarters at 403 Hillcrest Drive and the surrounding hillside from the city of Thousand Oaks. The district, which has leased the space since 2002 with its lease expiring in September 2027, said the grant will help preserve roughly 30 acres of open space and key safety features such as a helicopter landing zone — supporting community safety. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Fire victims filed a class-action suit in Ventura County Superior Court saying Servepro Global DRT misled them by promising insurance payment, doing work without a contract, and leaving homes in worse shape. They claim the company filed liens on many properties—an act they call organized fraud. Moorpark Acorn
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Next week, SIMI Film Fest will open its red carpet at Studio Movie Grill at Simi Valley Town Center as it presents 62 independent films from around the globe and local projects with panels featuring Hollywood insiders. A live film music concert by the Simi Valley Symphony Orchestra will occur at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 4 at the Rancho Simi Recreation and Parks District building—highlighting the strong bond between film and music. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Adventist Health Simi Valley has received two national awards from the American Heart Association for its treatment of heart attacks and strokes—earning the Get With The Guidelines—Stroke Gold Plus award for the third consecutive year and the Get With The Guidelines—Coronary Artery Disease STEMI Receiving Gold award—and is the only hospital in Ventura County with the coronary artery designation. The hospital also received the Target—Stroke and Target—Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll awards, showing its strong focus on quick and quality care. Moorpark Acorn
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ At Agoura High School on Aug 22, Agoura won its third straight football game with a score of 45 to 28 after a timer glitch stopped play when stadium lights turned off during the fourth quarter. At Newbury Park High School on Aug 19, Camarillo won a flag football game with a score of 36 to 12, and the girls showed strong play. Moorpark Acorn
