COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Earlier this week, a 55-year-old man who is 5 ft 4 in tall, weighs about 145 pounds, and has a small tattoo of the letter J on his left forearm was brought from the 3000 block of Albany Drive to Dignity Health's St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, and hospital staff are asking anyone with information to help reunite him with his family.  KEYT
  • United Way of Ventura County is asking for volunteers for its free tax assistance program that helps low-income families file federal and state returns from Feb. 1 through April 30 — volunteers work a four-hour shift each week at various in-person or remote locations. Training sessions are scheduled on Nov. 1 and 8 at the CLU Oxnard Campus and on Dec. 6 and 13 at Moorpark College — no prior experience is needed as all volunteers receive IRS certification.  Moorpark Acorn

BUSINESS NEWS

  • SpaceX will launch its Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base today at 8:41 a.m. to send 24 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit—weather or technical issues may delay the mission and local viewers in Ventura can watch from designated sites if skies are clear.  Ventura County Star

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the 10th annual Sea Glass and Ocean Arts Festival opens at Elks Lodge for ocean lovers and collectors with shopping and educational panels (running from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.). The Morning News interviewed festival director Karen Clark and jeweler Rachel Kenney, and tickets are still available (at the door and online).  KEYT
  • Cal State Channel Islands is opening the exhibit 'Before Now' by Michael Deragon at Napa Hall Art Gallery on Sept. 18 with a free reception at 5 p.m. The show runs until Oct. 30—featuring mixed-media collages, paintings and sound work made using vintage materials, with a performance and Q&A on Oct. 28 at 6 p.m.  Moorpark Acorn

FINANCE NEWS

  • Facebook began sending payments from its $725 million settlement to users who claimed they were harmed when the company shared data without permission—about 6,787,507 Californians who had accounts from May 24 to December 22 are eligible, with amounts depending on how many filed claims before the deadline ended in August. Those who did not file retain their right to sue later.  Ventura County Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ventura County will receive nearly $28 million in state funds from Proposition 1 to create permanent supportive housing near 1732 S. Lewis Road with 88 units — one of which is reserved for a resident property manager. Many Mansions will operate the project while DignityMoves acts as the developer, and local matching funds, including $2.5 million from Gold Coast Health Plan, have already been committed.  Moorpark Acorn

HEALTH NEWS

  • The eighth annual Fredrick Michael Gibson 5K/10K Run and Half Marathon for Depression Awareness will be held Sunday, Oct. 12 at Rancho Simi Community Park, 1765 Royal Ave — honoring Gibson and spreading the message that no one should suffer alone. Registration is open until Sept. 15, fees will increase after that, and rewards will be given to finishers — organizers aim to raise $75,000 for the Free Clinic’s vital services.  Moorpark Acorn

SPORTS NEWS

  • Ventura County rowers Isaac Moos and Miera Stouch made strong results at the U.S. Rowing Youth Nationals in Sarasota in May — Moos placed second in the U17 men's event and later earned a medal at the Canadian Royal Henley Regatta in August while Stouch, who began rowing after an ACL injury, finished 22nd — and both plan to pursue collegiate rowing careers.  Moorpark Acorn
  • During a girls’ flag football game at Simi Valley High School on Sept. 4, Hanna Chang fell on the turf and reached for a flag as Royal won overtime—12—6. In a non-league boys’ football game at Pacifica High on Sept. 5, Newbury Park’s Emmett Boyce and his team played while the Panthers fell to a 1—2 record with a final score of 56—35.  Moorpark Acorn
