CRIME NEWS
- ➤ After thefts at a roadside farm stand and of a girl’s clarinet from Mesa Union School were reported last week, local residents stepped up by buying from the stand and offering a replacement instrument—Superintendent Raul Ramirez said the district will replace the stolen clarinet. Moorpark Acorn
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ On Aug. 30, Bruce Shaw toured a Curtiss C-46F Commando—China Doll—at the Commemorative Air Force Museum in Camarillo while Joe Blewett and 13-year-old Patrick Huckins watched a MIG-21 cockpit demonstration and volunteer Paul Mitchell replaced a spark plug in a North American PBJ Mitchell during a 50-hour check. The museum, which features 14 aircraft, was open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. Moorpark Acorn
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Caltrans and Ventura County will start long-term road projects that will cause delays on major routes for drivers. State Route 118 in Moorpark, Vineyard Avenue in Oxnard and Highway 33 north of Ojai will see overnight work, lane closures and occasional full closures through October and beyond — drivers are advised to follow detour signs. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Andrea Gallagher, president of Senior Concerns, explains that she now uses a lighted magnifying glass to read fine print at home as her eyesight changes—she notes that a magnifier with a wide field of view and LED light can help many seniors maintain their independence. Moorpark Acorn

- ➤ Friday's week 5 high school football games delivered many results as Bishop Diego won 43—18 over Bishop Alemany, Nipomo defeated Arroyo Grande 33—25, Lompoc beat Kern Valley 42—10, and Cabrillo edged Pioneer Valley 21—18. Other matchups showed Santa Ynez lost 41—0 to Santa Maria, Santa Paula won over Carpinteria 43—10, Newbury Park beat Ventura 43—28, Camarillo routed Oxnard 49—0, with additional contests ending similarly.
