COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A recent article in The Chronicle of Philanthropy showed that only two of America's top 100 charities focus on older adults, a gap that leaves many seniors without enough care. Andrea Gallagher of (Senior Concerns) said less than 1% of foundation funds support aging, urging communities to invest more in vital senior services.  Moorpark Acorn
  • The City of Moorpark is building an inclusive playground at Tierra Rejada Park—designed with ramped access, accessible swings and sensory panels—to help children of all abilities play and grow together. The project will offer a mix of active play areas and quiet nooks, ensuring every child can experience play without limits.  Moorpark Acorn
  • Community volunteers will gather at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park in Camarillo for the Wreaths Across America ceremony at 11 a.m. Dec. 13 to honor local military heroes by placing up to 1,500 wreaths on veterans’ graves (organized by John Short of Rolling Thunder).  Moorpark Acorn
  • On November 13, organizers from the Port of Hueneme and three area dealerships distributed 450 boxes of Thanksgiving food on a first-come, first-served basis to active-duty military and veterans.  Ventura County Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Ventura residents can look up at the sky when the Leonids meteor shower peaks on Nov. 16—Nov. 17 and see between 3 and 15 bright meteors per hour with possible fireballs under a 9% moon. Experts advise seeking dark, open areas away from city lights for the best view.  Ventura County Star
  • A heavy storm drenched Ventura County on November 14 when rain flooded Highway 33 near Highway 150 in Ojai—local crews checked road conditions as residents resumed travel with caution.  Ventura County Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • SpaceX will launch its Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base on Nov. 16 at 9:21 p.m. to send a government weather satellite into orbit (this is the first launch under the new FAA curfew and the booster is expected to land on a drone ship in the Pacific).  Ventura County Star
  • The Ventura County Fire Department urged residents to fill sandbags and build emergency kits with extra glasses, medications, batteries—warning that rains of 1 to 6 inches could trigger debris flows after the mountain fire. The department will add 40 staff members and use smaller Type 6 fire engines to quickly clear debris.  KEYT
  • Residents near the Arroyo Simi urged city officials at the Moorpark City Council meeting on November 5 to clear a large homeless encampment that poses fire and safety risks—open flames, trash and overcrowding have alarmed nearby communities. Officials from Moorpark, Simi Valley and Ventura County are planning a coordinated cleanup that will last one or two days and include ongoing monitoring and outreach to those living at the site.  Moorpark Acorn

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Friday, Ventura’s CIF football team beat Moorpark 35-28 in the quarterfinals. The report listed additional scores — Arroyo Grande 42, Garces Memorial 29; Redwood 54, San Luis Obspo 0; and Templeton 40, Coalinga 14.  KEYT
