COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Deputies from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Moorpark station will host a 'Coffee with a Cop' event on Tuesday, Dec. 23 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Starbucks inside Target at 800 Los Angeles Ave to share crime prevention tips and meet community members (Spanish-speaking deputies will assist).  Moorpark Acorn
  • The Jewish Federation of Ventura County has partnered with federations in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and Pomona/San Gabriel to launch the Secure Community Initiative that offers threat assessments and training for local gatherings. Community leaders say the measure will help ensure a safe environment for celebrating Hanukkah.  Moorpark Acorn

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Roper Romp event is happening today at Ventura Harbor Village, where participants will gather at 10:30 a.m. dressed as Mrs. Roper to enjoy playful flash mob style fun (part of a nationwide tradition) and share smiles with locals.  Ventura County Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cal State Channel Islands announced the Channel Islands Tuition Promise for eligible lower-income first-year and transfer students entering in 2026; the program fully covers tuition plus fees when students show need using the FAFSA or California Dream Act Application, with any remaining balance filled by grants and scholarships.  Moorpark Acorn

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ventura County supervisors voted on Dec. 16 to oppose offshore oil and gas leasing and deep seabed mining along the 43-mile coastline, citing threats to tourism, fishing, and military operations. The board also joined the Local Government Outer Continental Shelf Coordination Program to counter federal proposals.  Moorpark Acorn

HEALTH NEWS

  • Federal+state+county funds run most aging services in our area, but nonprofits must raise extra money when budgets are tight. Ventura County is considering changes that may affect seniors like Emelia by altering how vital services are coordinated.  Moorpark Acorn
