Good morning, Ventura. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 17th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • VC Defensa volunteer Leo Martinez said ICE raids have led to a rise in food delivery demand and a drop in attendance at food distribution sites, so his group now bundles meals and essential hygiene items—delivering them to vulnerable families and farm workers who skip work out of deportation fears. Volunteer Yvonne Lomeli said the change helps ease one daily stress for those who have suffered significant hardship.  KEYT

CRIME NEWS

  • On March 30, two Ventura County Sheriff's deputies, Dylan Davis and Anthony Malagon, were charged with felony assault for allegedly attacking a security guard during an off‑duty altercation at a Camarillo cantina, with Davis also facing spousal abuse and misdemeanor battery charges and both set to return to court on Aug. 7.  KEYT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • George Retes, a 25-year-old disabled Army veteran from Glass House Farms, said he was wrongfully detained for three days after an immigration raid in Camarillo—despite identifying himself as a U.S. citizen—and is now calling for a full investigation as authorities review his case for potential federal charges.  KEYT
  • Metrolink installed a new $600,000 wireless crossing system—funded by the Federal Railroad Administration—to reduce traffic delays near Moorpark train station by activating crossing gates only when a train is about to pass. Moorpark and county officials, who backed the project since 2018, said they may extend it to other train services soon.  Ventura County Star
