Record tides flooded Victoria Avenue near Channel Islands Harbor, and more are coming this winter

Channel Islands Harbor's tides ran high as El Niño builds

If you live near the coast, we suggest watching the tide tables this winter. At , ocean water crested a rock wall and washed over Victoria Avenue, mostly through storm drains running backward, officials said. "If there was a storm right now, this would be much worse," said Michael Tripp, Ventura County's harbor director.

Last week, all-time sea level records fell in Los Angeles, San Diego Bay, Santa Barbara and La Jolla. A record-hot ocean and higher-than-normal tides drove it.

Newport Beach officials told residents to keep sandbags in place for the next king tides. Closer to home, forecasters listed Ventura County among the coastlines under advisories for isolated seawater flooding and beach erosion.

A new Costco has opened in Camarillo with a pharmacy, gas station and food court

If you've been driving to Oxnard to shop at Costco, you now have another Costco to choose from. The new Camarillo warehouse has opened, adding to the company's Ventura County presence. We suggest allowing extra time if you go soon: finding a parking place took patience during opening weekend.

  • Location: off Springville Drive
  • Also at the store: a pharmacy
  • Along: the 101, with the Oxnard Costco as the other option

Shoppers used to the Oxnard Costco now have another one along the 101. The two have something in common and one difference, shown here.

The Wrap

About seven blocks of classic cars near the Mission Basilica San Buenaventura made for a Day of the Dead car show in downtown Ventura, and many of the cars carried altars honoring the owners' loved ones. Many visitors came well-dressed or as El Catrín, and the Downtown Social Club hosted. Chrome and remembrance, side by side.
